Lip Filler – the down and dirty- everything You Need to Know

If you’re considering lip filler, you’re not alone. Lip enhancement is one of the most sought-after treatments today, and at Revisions Aesthetics + Wellness, we're here to help you every step of the way. To help you decide if lip filler is the right choice for you, we've compiled a comprehensive guide with essential information and frequently asked questions.

What is Lip Filler?

Lip filler, also known as lip augmentation, are injectable treatments designed to enhance, add volume, or rejuvenate your lips. Depending on your needs, fillers can also help hydrate your lips. Lip fillers are more versatile than many people realize, offering a range of results from subtle hydration to more dramatic volume.

What Can Lip Filler Do?

Lip fillers are perfect for achieving natural-looking volume, fullness, and improved symmetry. Whether you're aiming for a subtle enhancement or a more pronounced look, RA + W can customize your treatment to help you achieve the youthful, plump pout you've always dreamed of.

If you're reading this, you're probably already thinking about lip fillers — so let's dive in!

What is Lip Filler Made Of?

The most common lip fillers, like Restylane, are made from hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance in the body known for its skin-hydrating and plumping properties. HA helps skin retain moisture, making it the ideal ingredient for lip filler injections.

HA-based fillers offer several advantages:

- They allow for precise control over shape and volume.

- They're long-lasting and typically well-tolerated, with minimal risk of allergic reactions.

- They can be easily dissolved if necessary, allowing for gradual adjustments.

- Most lip filler products contain lidocaine, a numbing agent, to make the process more comfortable.

Note: Always let us know if you have any allergies before treatment.

How Long Do Lip Injections Last?

On average, lip fillers last anywhere from **12-18months**. However, results can vary depending on factors like your metabolism, lifestyle, and the specific filler used. Some people may require touch-ups every 6-9 months(think half a syringe or less!), while others may go longer before needing a refresh.

Do I Need to Dissolve Existing Filler Before Getting More?

If you’re coming in for a refresh or want more volume, there's typically no need to dissolve existing filler unless there are issues like migration or visible lumps. In some cases, dissolving filler may be recommended to correct these problems before re-injecting, this is why we recommend a consultation before hand!

How Should I Prepare for Lip Filler Treatment?

Here’s a breakdown of what you should do before your appointment:

2 Weeks Before:

- Avoid dental work or vaccinations before or after your treatment.

1 Week Before:

- Stay away from blood-thinning medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and other supplements.

- Avoid St. John’s Wort, garlic, ginseng, and Vitamin E, which can increase bruising.

2 Days Before:

- Discontinue any anti-aging skincare products (like Retin-A or Glycolic Acid) around the lip area.

- Avoid waxing or tweezing near your lips.

24 Hours Before:

- Skip alcohol to minimize bruising and swelling.

On the Day of Your Treatment:

- Come to your appointment with a clean face, free of makeup.

What is Recovery Like After Lip Fillers?

Post-treatment discomfort is minimal and typically subsides within 12-24 hours. Swelling can last 48-72 hours, and bruising may take 4-7 days to fade. Most of our patients love their lips even during the swelling phase!

If you're getting lip fillers before a big event, make sure to schedule your appointment at least one month ahead to allow time for full recovery.

Will I Bruise After Lip Injections?

Bruising is generally minimal if you follow pre-treatment guidelines, but if you're prone to bruising, some minor marks may appear. To reduce bruising, apply ice for the first 24-48 hours and then use heat packs for the next few days. Avoid touching your lips or using makeup on the area for at least 24 hours to reduce the risk of infection.

Do Lip Injections Hurt?

Our lip filler we use contains lidocaine, which numbs the area, and we apply a numbing gel before starting. Most patients find the procedure more comfortable than expected, but everyone’s pain tolerance varies.

What Are the Risks?

As with any cosmetic treatment, lip fillers come with some risks, including:

- Bruising, swelling, and discomfort

- Cold sore reactivation or minor skin reactions (pretreat with medication- let us know if you may need this!)

- Asymmetry or migration

- In rare cases, vessel occlusion (blockage of blood vessels)\

Can You Get Lip Fillers While Pregnant or Breastfeeding?

No, we don’t recommend lip fillers during pregnancy or breastfeeding. There’s not enough research to guarantee their safety, so we prioritize your health and well-being.
